Behind the scenes with modern mystic astrologist - Brooke Macqueen | From Various Friends

“Poetry and reading books take you to a place like music does. It gets you right when you are in that spot. I think that is why people resonate with what I write. I am an intuitive writer; I work within the seasons and embody astrology.” ~ Brooke Macqueen

What started out as a mum and bubs workout group has now evolved into a flourishing friendship that has landed us here. With two powerhouse ladies – Megan from Daughters of India and Brooke from Various Friends rolling out this beautiful collaboration of images and styled shoot.

For those that are unfamiliar with @variousfriends by Brooke Macqueen, it is an astrology business that empowers women and children. Influenced by the sky, Brooke writes for well-known brands such as Children of the Tribe, Osun Sparkling, and Slow Journal. She also writes astrology pieces on her Instagram page and does other collaborations.

Here, we chat with Brooke to find out how she found herself in Astrology, managing a business with two kids and what it means to bring people into their ‘aha’ moments where everything she writes makes sense to their world.

One of the many things that is very striking about Brooke is her calm and honourable spirit to her work and life in general. Brooke believes that her love for astrology was always there, but the true catalyst was once she birthed her son Banjo. She was one of the first from her friendship group to have a child, and having moved further out of town, she was feeling very isolated and unsure of her new motherhood world.

“I think that is why I found my path into what I do now. What I stand for is all about empowering women and children. To help them grow together. That is where my birth charts which I also like to call a ‘parents manual’ to their children, come into play” Brooke says.

“When Banjo was born, I went and saw an intuitive counsellor and it was really validating. She said to me, ‘you love your child, but you just don’t love everything that comes with motherhood’. This was a pivotal moment for me. She then asked me what I love and the first thing that came out of my mouth was astrology and she told me to do that.”

Brooke then found herself searching for astrologers until one day the right one appeared. To this day she continues to be Brooke’s mentor, business coach and friend. They meet up once a week still.

“The teacher will appear when the student is ready.”

She then found herself studying astrology ever since and will continue to study it for the rest of her life – “the more you know the less you know”.

So, how does one launch a business with two little kids in tow and manage the rapid growth that took place over the past year? Various Friends organically grew from 3,000 followers on Instagram to 11,0000 followers in the space of a week after Brooke posted her 2020 horoscopes for each star sign. It came as such an intense wave that Brooke had to turn off her phone briefly to be able to survive the influx.

Something that is apparent with Brooke is that even in the growth of her business she has stayed incredibly true to what she does. She is an intuitive writer and therefore likes to wait until the exact time within the planetary alignments to write the pieces that she needs to for her collaborations. Brooke uses astrology to help guide her business, even down to researching when the right time was for her to launch Various Friends.

“As above, for below” ~ This is the saying that astrologists have for the powerful impact that the planets have on our earth and us, vibrationally.

“The biggest thing that people seem to want, is to read my words. Poetry and reading books take you to a place like music does. It gets you right when you are in that spot. I think that is why people resonate with what I write. I am an intuitive writer; I work within the seasons and embody astrology.”

Through responding to everyone on her Instagram page, to planning out bigger projects with her husband (who is the other part of Various Friends and creates all the beautiful art you see on the page), to wanting to collaborate with more brands, and juggling her two children, Banjo 5 and Clancy 3. Brooke is certainly a powerhouse of a women who exudes such a kind, caring and humble nature.
